Avalanche Conditions

Avalanche Conditions

We had good skiing in Simpson Bowl today. There was 10cm of new snow and evidence of natural avalanches > 48 hrs up to size 2 on north facing terrain, I suspect mainly from cornice triggering.

I found a snowpack depth of 125cm in the upper bowl and had moderate-hard results on a 25cm thick slab buried 50cm below the surface. The shear was a non-planar break in the facets. We skiied east facing and north facing runs remaining on supported terrain and checking the snowpack often for signs of below surface slabs.

The facetted midpack wasn't always supportive (grrr), but the skiing in the bowl was good.

Temperatures remained cool up there, with the warmest I recorded -10C. Those temps are definitely not helping the snowpack to heal and round.
