Climbing Conditions

Yesterday (June 7th 2017) Larry Shiu, Patrick Lindsay and I climbed the South Rib of Mt Tupper, and descended the West Ridge. We found excellent travel on the approach, with snow starting from right behind the snow shed and a poor freeze. The rib was almost entirely dry, with the odd snow patch and seep that could normally be avoided. The West Ridge of Mt Tupper was in similar condition, with the odd patch of snow not making the climbing any more difficult than normal. There weren’t any tracks on the summit, so I guess we must’ve been the first people up there this year!

We were able to butt-slide and boot ski most of the descent down a couloir on the far skiers right of the Lone Pine slide path, with a little bit of mellow bushwhacking to get back to the highway.

I’ve attached a couple of photos in case you’re thinking about objectives up at Rogers Pass at the moment. Conditions look great on many routes, and if you haven’t had enough skiing yet it looked like there would be good corn skiing up high with a good freeze.

Have fun up there!
