Climbing Conditions

Parks Canada Visitor Safety climbed the North Glacier of Mt Aberdeen Saturday morning. Overall travel conditions were good with freezing temperatures and some down flowing wind to help us start acclimatizing for winter. Temps stayed cool on North aspects and we did not observe any rockfall on the route.

We found 5-20cm of recent snow on the glacier depending on elevation, with isolated drifts up to 50cm deep. A few thin wind slabs had formed that were surprisingly easy to trigger but still very small.

Some narrow crevasses were snow covered and travel was a little slower as a result but most are easily seen. We were able to carefully climb through the schrund near the center, minimizing exposure to the seracs of the upper glacier.

The fall larch colours are in full display, enjoy!
